Prepare to be thrilled, because the Mean Girls 2024 musical movie is just around the corner. Since its debut in 2004, this iconic young adult comedy has captivated an entire generation. It later made its way to Broadway as a musical, and now it’s gearing up for its own big-screen adaptation. Think of it as another High School Musical: The Musical: The Series situation, but with a slightly different twist.
The film, tentatively titled Mean Girls (2024), is essentially a reboot of the Tony-nominated Broadway production. This exciting news was first announced in 2020, and now it’s moving full steam ahead, set to hit theaters sooner than you might expect. Before that happens, let’s dive into all the juicy details, including the trailer, cast, release date, and more.
Mean Girls 2024 Release Date?
Initially, the Mean Girls musical movie was intended to premiere exclusively on Paramount+. However, according to Deadline, it was confirmed on September 22, 2023, that the film will hit theaters on January 12, 2024, coinciding with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend.
Mean Girls 2024 Cast?
The cast of the Mean Girls musical movie is led by Angourie Rice, a talented Australian actress who will portray the central character, Cady Heron. Marvel fans may recognize her as Betty Brant from Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy.
Joining her are Auli’i Cravalho, best known for her role as Moana in Disney animated masterpiece, who will play Janis, and Jaquel Spivey, a Tony and Grammy-nominated Broadway actor, who will take on the role of Damian.
On the Plastics’ side, we have talented individuals such as Reneé Rapp, previously seen in Sex Lives of College Girls, stepping into the shoes of Regina George for the second time. She originally portrayed the iconic character on Broadway. Avantika Vandanapu, making a cameo appearance in SLOCG, will play Karen, while Bebe Wood from Love, Victor will portray Gretchen.
But the star-studded cast doesn’t end there. Christopher Briney from The Summer I Turned Pretty will charm audiences as Aaron Samuels, while Mahi Alam from American Born Chinese will bring a fresh take on Kevin G, now known as Kevin Ganatra.
In addition, we have an array of familiar faces joining the Mean Girls family. ’00s romantic comedy sweetheart Busy Phillips will portray Regina’s mom, Mrs. George, while Jenna Fischer from The Office will embody Cady’s mom, Mrs. Heron. Mad Men superstar Jon Hamm takes on the role of Coach Carr, and comedian Connor Ratliff is reportedly joining as a new teacher character named Mr. Rapp, as revealed by Deadline.
We’re also excited to welcome Ashley Park, an original Broadway cast member who continued to shine until the musical’s closure, and who may be familiar to you from her role in Emily in Paris. Park joins the cast in a new and exciting role as a teacher named Madame Park.
Mean Girls 2024 Trailer?
The teaser trailer for the Mean Girls musical movie initially premiered alongside Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert movie. Fans could only catch glimpses of it through fan-uploaded clips on social media. However, Paramount released the official, extended trailer to the public on November 8.
Set to Olivia Rodrigo’s catchy tune “Get Him Back!” the trailer immediately warns us, “This is not your mother’s Mean Girls.” We catch our first glimpse of Reneé Rapp as the fierce Queen Bee, Regina George, rocking the character’s iconic “R” initial necklace. We also see the highly anticipated return of the hot pink Burn Book, Damian and Janis in all their bestie glory, and Cady’s awkwardness towards her crush, Aaron Samuels. Of course, the disastrous “Jingle Bell Rock” performance at the Winter Talent Show and Regina’s unforgettable “Get in, loser” line also make appearances. The only thing missing is the original music from the film, which adds an interesting twist.
Mean Girls 2024 Plot?
Like its 2004 predecessor, the new Mean Girls musical movie follows the story of Cady Heron, a teenage student who recently transferred to a new high school in suburban Illinois after a childhood spent in the African savanna with her zoologist parents. After teaming up with the school’s “misfits,” Cady goes above and beyond to fit in with The Plastics, the most popular clique at North Shore High, led by Regina George, the ultimate queen bee.
Given its roots in the 2018 Broadway musical, expect a substantial amount of dialogue and plot development to be portrayed through song. All three versions of Mean Girls – the film, stage production, and musical movie – were written by the talented Tina Fey. This new musical movie iteration will be co-produced by Lorne Michaels and directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Fey teased that the songs in the movie will have a much more contemporary pop sound compared to those in the musical. She explained that while Broadway performances require projection to reach the back of the theater, movies allow for more intimate moments. With an incredible directing team and choreographer on board, the musical movie promises to be an absolute sensation.
Mean Girls 2024 where to watch?
Mean Girls” the movie musical will be released in theaters on January 12, 2024. The film was originally slated to be released on Paramount+ before moving to a theatrical release, according to Deadline.
