The chapter begins with the children preparing for their big day: their seventh birthday! In the world that Jonas lives in, children no longer get older on their birthdays. No, they all ascend together as a cluster, regardless of the time they were in reality born. It is as though the community determined that the life of everybody must attain harmony.
That is, matching clothes, the same haircut among boys (short and neat), and girls being given their first braids. Our lead character, Jonas, observes the excitement of his little brother, Lily, in her ribbon and the stress of his friend, Asher, in having his hair cut off. Then we cut to the Naming Ceremony at the Auditorium. Here lies the true gist of the chapter. Many years ago a baby boy called Caleb drowned in the river—super sad stuff.
The entire community underwent a ritual of loss, during which every day they hissed his name more and more subtly until it dissipated, as they were letting him go. However, they do not forget, but a new baby of the same name is introduced to maintain the memory. It is an interim job, intended to restore the hurt of the family and the vacancy in the community.
The new Caleb is passed along on hands through the crowd, and all whisper his name, welcoming him. It is touching, demonstrating how this society copes with grief: not with loud feelings, but with silent, mutual ceremonies. Then we have a glimpse of everyday life. Jonas is on the way to the big Ceremony of Twelve next year, the year in which children receive their jobs (called Assignments) according to what the Elders believe would best suit them.
What will Happen in Full Book Chapter 7?
Full Book Chapter 7 is devoted to the Ceremony of Twelve, which all the kids of the community wait for. This is the time when Jonas and his friends that are all twelve years old get to know what jobs (so-called Assignments) they would work at throughout their lives. The entire community is united in the auditorium, and the mood is very strong– imagine the combination of excitement and nerves. They are all dressed identically and seated in orderly rows, and each assignment is called out one after another by the elders who have followed the kids over years.
There is no pressure, right? Jonas is surrounded by his friends, such as Asher and Fiona, and he is feeling the pressure. The Elders do not select jobs randomly; the Elders have been following each child on what they are good at, such as Asher always joking and Fiona being super caring. Their ceremony begins with Number One in their group and progresses onwards.
Both of the kids are called onstage, their assignment is told to them, and they are given a quick explanation as to why they fit. Others receive jobs such as laborer or birthmother, and others may receive a more prestigious one such as engineer. It is so dramatic that when you finally get your assignment, it is your life path—no do-overs. And not telling too much, Jonas does not personally have everything that he planned.
There is something that occurs, and he feels he is not the same as the rest, and it is somewhat of a shock. The chapter demonstrates how the society is fond of its rules and order, yet you begin to notice the cracks in the system. Why do the elders have secrets about some things? And why is Jonas filled with pride and concern? It is as though you found out that growing up does not only translate to attainment of a cool job but also to a burden that you never asked to bear.
